The parents of a young woman killed in an arson attack have paid tribute to their daughter at the dedication of a memorial garden.

Cheryl Pocock, from Strood, was 20 when she was killed in a fire at a pub in south east London in 1995.

Cheryl was living in a flat above the bar and was the only resident unable to escape from the blaze.

Now a peaceful corner of Strood Cemetery has been transformed into a colourful garden in her memory.

The Cheryl Pocock Strood Community Memorial Garden was created by Strood South Community Group to allow people unable to travel to Medway Crematorium to pay their respects to lost loved ones.

The group decided to use Cheryl’s name for the garden because it lies next to her memorial plaque.

At a dedication ceremony on Wednesday Cheryl’s parents Graham and Sandra paid tribute to their daughter.

Mrs Pocock said: “We were absolutely overwhelmed with emotion. We know that Cheryl would have liked it.

"It was special even after 13 years. Cheryl will be sitting on her cloud, looking down and feeling very special.”
