Gas wells catch fire

Two gas wells caught fire near a landfill site.

Crews from Larkfield Fire Station went to Offham Landfill, in Teston Road, near West Malling, after methane gas caught fire on Tuesday.

A spokesman for Kent Fire and Rescue Service said crews were fighting the fire with two hose jets and further investigations into the extent of the fire were continuing but eye witness reports said the blaze was under control by 5.30pm.

The Environment Agency was called in to assess the situation, but the spokesman added that an exclusion zone was not in force.
