Kent wicketkeeper Geraint Jones fears that being one of the club’s high earners could prove a concern when it comes to negotiating a new contract this winter.
The 35-year-old’s three-year deal runs out at the end of next season and he is expected to shortly begin discussions about his future.
Jones is keen to see out his career at Kent after 11 years with the club but believes his future might not be entirely in his own hands.
He said: "It’s something I will be asking and chatting to (chief executive) Jamie Clifford about over the winter to get the ball rolling.
"Kent’s where I have played all my professional cricket and I don’t want to leave the club but I also understand I am one of the higher wage earners and finance is an issue so that’s a bit of a concern coming into my last year of contract and in my benefit year as well.
"I know my wage will be a considering factor when it comes to a new contract but hopefully we can sort something out and I finish my playing career in three or four years at Kent."
Despite a poor two seasons on the pitch which has seen the club relegated from LV= County Championship Division 1 followed by finishing second-bottom in Division 2, Jones forsees further difficulties as the club comes to terms with the loss of key batsmen Joe Denly and Martin van Jaarsveld and under the leadership of a new head coach.
Jones added: "We’ll have a new coach coming in and a new regime.
"We have a group of young guys that need to be nurtured over the next couple of years to produce a strong team.
"I think it is a minimum of a three-year project with the current squad we have got and it would be good to emulate what has happened at Lancashire this year."
