Gillingham’s troubles continue in League 2 after losing on home soil for the second time this season.
The Gills conceded goals in each half and despite having a number of chances of their own they finished Tuesday night’s encounter second best.
Defeat saw the Gills slip down to 20th in the table – three points off the bottom.
Wycombe went into the break a goal ahead despite Gillingham playing some of their most attacking football of the season.
The Gills had extra pace in their side with the inclusion of Dennis Oli on the right and Danny Spiller into the middle of the pitch.
Gillingham hit the post early on when a cross from Chris Palmer was nearly diverted into his own net by Chris Westwood. Only the woodwork saved him from scoring an own-goal.
Adebayo Akinfenwa smashed a shot from an angle wide and on 18 minutes Spiller put an effort the wrong side of the post.
Gillingham failed to convert any of their chances and paid the price on 23 minutes when on a counter-attack Stuart Beavon rolled the ball into the path of Gareth Ainsworth and he finished with a low shot.
McDonald came close on 37 minutes but hit shot flashed across the face of goal and the Gills went in at half-time a goal down.
Just four minutes into the second half and Wycombe doubled the lead when Ben Strevens played the ball into the path of Kevin Betsy, who finished low.
With an hour gone 16-year-old Ashley Miller was introduced for Akinfenwa and the youngster's presence gave Gills a boost.
Both McDonald and Palmer came close but there remained gaps at the other end and Julian had to make good saves to deny Beavon, Ainsworth and Danny Foster.
Wycombe should have added a third with ten minutes left when Betsy broke clear but with only Julian to beat he dragged the shot wide.
