Gillingham ended their season with a win thanks to a Charlie Lee double in League 2 on Saturday.

Lee opened the scoring with a shot from distance in the first half and finished Morecambe off with a second goal after the break.

Gills boss Andy Hessenthaler opted against making major changes to his side, for a game that meant little to either team. Jack Payne was the only change to the starting XI, as he came in to replace the injured Chris Whelpdale.

Morecambe came closest to scoring in the opening stages of the game. Jordan Burrow was at full stretch, unmarked, but was unable to divert Lewis Alesandra’s cross into the net.

With 15 minutes gone the same Morecambe player made a vital interception, denying Danny Kedwell at the other end, as he cleared off the line.

Just three minutes later the Gills took the lead when Lee – who was lucky to still be playing after being on the receiving end of a heavy Will Haining challenge early on – drove a low shot home from 20 yards.

There was very little action for the rest of the half. In stoppage time Jo Kuffour had a shot blocked by keeper Barry Roche but the Gills went into the break with just a narrow advantage.

Morecambe fired a few half chances at Gills’ goal at the start of the second half but Paulo Gazzaniga was untroubled.

The Gills got lucky just after the hour as Niall Cowperthwaite’s shot from distance did trouble Gazzaniga and he could only parry the ball into the path of Burrow. The visiting striker was, however, unable to get a shot away.

Burrow continued to be on the end of Morecambe’s best chances but he stabbed wide with 20 minutes left when in a good position.

At the other end Kedwell smashed a chance narrowly over the bar.

A second Gills goal came with 76 minutes gone and Lee claimed his sixth of the season, poking home a shot under Roach, after Danny Jackman had played the midfielder in on goal.

Morecambe were denied the chance to half the deficit when Payne – a constant spoiler of play for the visitors all afternoon – blocked Chris McCready’s close-range shot just moments after Lee’s second.
