Andy Hessenthaler boosted his ranks on and off the pitch in the lead-up to the Crewe game.
The Gills boss brought in defensive coach Wally Downes – best known for assisting Steve Coppell at Crystal Palace and Reading – in preparation for the match.
Hessenthaler said: "Wally has come in. I’ve known him for some time.
"He predominantly works with the back four, and he did a bit of work with them this week, though we weren’t sure what back four we were going to have.
"He’ll come in a couple of days a week. He’s a different voice and an experienced voice. I’m pleased he’s here. He’s good."
The club have also welcomed sports psychologist Ashley Lawrence.
Hessenthaler said: "It may help us. He’s done a bit of work this week about positive thinking."
Hessenthaler also hailed the impact of his three loan signings, Swindon left-back Callum Kennedy, Peterborough utility man Charlie Lee and his fellow Posh midfielder Chris Whelpdale.
Hessenthaler said Whelpdale’s impact had been phenomenal, but added: "I was delighted with all three of them. It’s not easy to come into the situation we’re in."
