Gillingham manager Andy Hessenthaler admits building for next season must wait until his future is resolved.
Hessenthaler (pictured) will find out this week if the club’s hierarchy are willing to give him a third chance to win promotion from League 2.
Last week chairman Paul Scally expressed his frustration at the club’s failure to get out of the Football League’s basement division for a second season running.
Hessenthaler said: "It is my third year next year and I want to get this promotion we all set out to try and do.
"The first thing would be to talk to the chairman and see the direction for myself and then once that is done we will go from there.
"I have a year left (on my contract) but he (Mr Scally) may change that. I would be disappointed because I want to stay and finish the job.
"I read his comments in the paper and he was being honest.
"He is thinking exactly how I am thinking because I am disappointed at the season and we should have at least got in the top seven.
"We missed out by two points. I will look at my own performance and we will see where we go from there."
