Andy Hessenthaler blasted his team for the individual errors which cost them in the 2-0 defeat at Morecambe in nPower League 2 on Saturday.

The Gills conceded the first goal after just eight minutes, with a shot over keeper Ross Flitney’s head, and Morecambe wrapped up the win with a second 20 minutes before the end – after Matt Fish was beaten on the flank.

“It wasn’t good enough and it’s been a disappointing week for us,” said the Gills boss, who has seen his side lose twice on the road this week.

“We had a lot of possession but we didn’t do enough with it. We gave two sloppy goals away, from individual errors, and those two mistakes have cost us. We go back home pointless.

“We can’t make the mistakes, individual mistakes. If you aren’t going to score then you need to make sure you don’t concede. We conceded after a few minutes and the keeper (Flitney) has to save it. He’s made a mistake.

“He has held his hands up to it but I am not going to be too critical of Roscoe because I think he has been fantastic since he’s been at the club.

“Fish has shown his inexperience with the second goal. He has to come and not let the lad past him. He made it too easy for him and they punished us again.

“We need to stop making mistakes and we also have to start taking our opportunities if we are going to get a consistent run. We are a couple of steps forward and then one back and we need to start getting better.”

Hessenthaler felt his side had enough of the ball on Saturday but failed to make use of their possession.

He said: “We just huffed and puffed and made poor decisions with the football.

“The players need to show more desire and belief to go in there and get into the 18 yard box and score goals.

“We get in the final third but we’re not punishing teams because we’ve had enough of the football and enough opportunities but we switched off and made two poor mistakes defensively and got punished.”
