Gillingham boss Andy Hessenthaler was disappointed to come away from Saturday’s game with only a point but felt is was all they deserved.

Despite being in the driving seat for the opening 45 minutes the Gills let the visitors back into the match and they deservedly pulled level.

“We didn’t deserve to win the game because we just weren’t right in the second half,” said Hessenthaler.

“We’re disappointed because we’re at home and the biggest factor for me was that we were in a winning position at half-time, we put ourselves into that winning position, without playing particularly great, but when you are in that position, you feel, especially on your own patch that you can go on and win the game.

“You have to give them a lot of credit. They deserved to get something out of the game because of their second half performance, which put us on the back foot.

“We defended too deep as a team at times and we didn’t seem to be able to put enough pressure on the football. Credit to them.”

Curtis Weston had put the Gills ahead on 25 minutes but it was all-square in the second half. Hessenthaler dismissed suggestions that Bury’s equaliser was off-side after viewing a replay of the goal.

“It looked like it was on-side,” he said. “I had a quick look at the video and it looked like a legitimate goal. I would like to see the offside given against Cody in the first half, which was very close, after Bayo headed him through.

“They made the decision and I’m not going to go on about it.”

Bury’s goal was claimed by Ryan Lowe but Hessenthaler admits that the video showed the ball was put into the net by Gills defender John Nutter.

He said: “I don’t think Alan Julian (Gills keeper) has made any outstanding saves, other than the one that goes in. The one that goes in, he saves it - it’s going wide.

“Unfortunately for John his momentum is going back and he’s cleared it, it’s hit the bar and gone in. I don’t blame John for that at all because he is going back to try and clear it off the line.”
