Confidence will not be dented – that was the message from Gillingham after the defeat at Bradford.
The Gills dropped back down the League 2 table on Saturday after conceding an injury-time winner but boss Andy Hessenthaler said they can still approach the next two home games with renewed vigour.
"We won’t lose confidence just because of this one game," he said. "We know what we’ve got to work on. It’s a kick in the teeth, but we’ve got to bounce back."
However, the Gillingham manager (pictured) admitted that his team will need to raise their game against Burton and Southend.
"We go back with our tails between our legs. We’re gutted, but we have to win our next two homes games, simple as that," he said.
"There were a few off-colour. First half we got into the game and started passing the ball quite well.
"We didn’t keep the ball well enough (in the second half) and it was coming back too easily.
"Their heads are down. I can’t ask for any more from them effort-wise. We switched off at the end and it cost us. We’ve got to get our heads up and learn from the situation."
Hessenthaler also felt referee Oliver Langford did his team no favours in the second half at Bradford.
The 10,000-plus crowd got on the referee’s back and he seemed to give a number of decisions their way as the game wore on.
The most critical decision was the free-kick which led to Bradford’s goal.
"I looked at the build-up and to give the free-kick was very soft," said Hessenthaler.
"I made a gesture that they sometimes get under pressure when the fans get on their backs and there were a few soft free-kicks that he was giving.
"But we can’t be blaming the referee. If I’m wrong and it is a foul (on the keeper) then I will talk to the referee or somebody from his association."
