Cody McDonald receives treatment after being fouled by Shrewsbury's Shane Cansdell-Sherriff By Matthew Panting

Referee Robert Madley was right not to show Shrewsbury defender Shane Cansdell-Sherriff a red card at Priestfield on Saturday, according to Gillingham boss Andy Hessenthaler.

The home crowd were calling for Cansdell-Sherriff to be dismissed after his late challenge on Cody McDonald sent the Gills striker crashing into an advertising hoarding.

"I don’t think he should have been sent off," said Hessenthaler. "Cody has got a nasty cut across his knee when he hit the boards but I’m not one for saying he should have been sent off.

"It was a rash challenge, Cody nicked it away from him at the last minute. I’ve done many of those tackles at this place and people will know that.

"I’m not going to say too much. He has given him a booking, fine. Cody just got there first, he has gone for an honest challenge and caught him. It looked worse as he hit the advertising hoarding and our fans were going mental."

Gillingham’s consultant physio Javed Mughal could now find himself in trouble with the Football Association after he was sent to the stands by referee Madley for taking his protests about the challenge too far.
