Stanley Aborah takes on Faversham's Richard Avery Picture: Chris Davey
by Luke Cawdell
Stanley Aborah is set to be handed a short-term contract with Gillingham on Wednesday.
The skilful midfielder began his career at Dutch giants Ajax but an 18-month injury lay-off meant he has had to start his career again.
Gills manager Andy Hessenthaler is still not totally convinced that Aborah can do the business in League 2 but appears willing to give him a chance.
Aborah once more impressed on Tuesday night, as Gillingham concluded their pre-season campaign against Faversham, and the attacking-midfielder is due for talks with Hessenthaler on Wednesday.
Hessenthaler said: "I like him and he’s got great ability but something is telling me is he a bit of a luxury or could he be a player that if a game is stretched with his quality then all of a sudden he could open things up?
"The chairman has told me to go ahead and do what I feel is right. We have got a lot of midfield players but Stanley is something different.
"I have heard a lot of comments from the fans and I know they want us to do something but as a manager I need to look at the bigger picture. He has something to offer and we may do something for a month and then go from there."
Aborah, 23, was born in Ghana but has Belgium nationality and still lives in the country. He’s been with the Gills since the start of pre-season.
He progressed through the Ajax youth system and appeared four times for the senior side, including once in the Champions League in a game against Maccabi Tel-Aviv.
A move to Middlesborough fell through because of an injury and he had spells at FCV Dender EH and FC Den Bosch before a groin injury left his sidelined for the last year and a half.
"We’ll keep him hungry and see where we go with it," Hessenthaler added.
