Gills boss Mark Stimson has called for a united front as his side have eight weeks to save themselves from relegation back to League 2.

The Gills face their biggest test in weeks when promotion-chasers Huddersfield arrive at Priestfield on Saturday.

In recent games fans have vented their frustrations at Gills’ struggles but Stimson (pictured) knew this season would be a battle for survival and wants everyone to focus on keeping the club in League 1.

He said: "The way we are going to stay in this division is to be together, get behind each other and give it one hell of a go.

"We’ll certainly do that. The players are up for the challenge and we’ll look forward to it. The only way you go forward is if you’re together."

The Gills head into the game just two points and three places above the relegation positions with 12 games left to play.

Stimson said: "I said it at the beginning of the season, it would go to the wire. If we stay in this division it will be a massive success. At the beginning people probably thought I was negative but it’s the big picture."

Huddersfield lost for the first time in 12 games in midweek, with a 5-0 hiding at big-spending Southampton, but they remain firmly entrenched in the battle for a play-off spot.

Stimson’s side boast one of the best home records in the division, with the meanest home defence, and that means there will be little fear shown from his players.

The Gills boss said: "They won’t be worried about Huddersfield but they will be respected because we know what they are like.

"At home we have had some good results against some top teams. We need to maintain that and make sure we are right up for it.

"We need to try and get points on the board to make life easier in the last four or five games."
