Manager Mark Stimson hailed his Gillingham side’s "phenomenal" home record on Saturday and immediately turned his attention to completing his mission.
The Gills need just one more point to guarantee their League 1 status for next season after sweeping aside another top team at fortress Priestfield on Saturday.
Stimson’s men travel to already-relegated Wycombe this Saturday knowing just what is needed to win their relegation battle. Win or draw and they are up – lose and they will have to rely on other teams also slipping up.
"We’re close and now we just have to finish the job off," said Stimson (pictured). "If we do that, with all the injuries we’ve had throughout the season, it would be a good achievement.
"The boys have nearly done it and I would be really pleased if they do."
The win over Southampton came two weeks after Gills beat promotion hopefuls Leeds and completed a home campaign that saw none of League 1’s top nine sides win at Priestfield.
Stimson said: "It’s a phenomenal record and I said to the players it’s been amazing.
"We just need one point away now. We just have to keep the belief we have had at home and take it to Wycombe.
"Those two wins (against Leeds and Southampton) have given us a great chance to stay in this league. We do believe that if we stay in this league then next season could be a lot better.
"The players are definitely capable in League 1 and we just need to make sure we are in it. It’s a fantastic league and it’s the place you want to be."
