A proposed move by Gillingham for a new striker is being held up by contract negotiations.

The Gills were due to complete a loan deal this afternoon for a player to partner Simeon Jackson up-front but talks are still on-going.

Boss Mark Stimson (pictured) said on Saturday that he was close to completing a "big scoop" but negotiations over terms of the deal are threatening to scupper it.

"Something else has been thrown in to it and it might stop it now," said Stimson.

The Gills manager is keeping the identity to himself for now.

Stimson, meanwhile, checked out two trialist strikers in the reserve match against Crystal Palace at Priestfield on Wednesday afternoon.

Gabriel Odunaike, a former Welling player, made his third reserve appearance but Stimson will now let the striker move on and keep tabs with him.

Coming on as a second half sub was big Nigerian front man Amadou Abdullei and he’ll be returning to Priestfield on Thursday to train.

Stimson said: "Gabriel has done well. He is probably short of the level we are looking at but he’s an honest kid with a bit of pace. He’s going to go and get some football and we’ll monitor him.

The lad (Amadou) came on at half time who we haven’t seen before. He turned up and showed a bit of physical presence but it’s really too early to make a decision on him. We’ll look at him in training and see what happens."
