Mark Stimson admitted the most pleasing aspect of Tuesday night’s game at Brighton was seeing star striker Simeon Jackson walk away unscathed from a nasty first-minute challenge.

The Gills boss, who has been battling against a tide of injuries all season, must have winced as Tommy Elphick dumped Jackson on the floor from behind just seconds into the match.

Referee Graham Scott let Elphick off with a warning and Stimson was left stunned by the lack of action by the official.

He said: “That was probably the most pleasing thing, that he got up and was able to carry on.

"For the referee not to caution him (Elphick) is beyond me because it’s the rules. We get people cautioned at the weekend for celebrating a goal but not for someone borderline putting a person out for a few weeks – it’s crazy.

“If you are going to book people, play by the rules and do it from the start.”
