Gillingham are targeting a place in the FA Cup fourth round on Saturday and a cash windfall that could boost the transfer kitty.
Boss Mark Stimson admits he has no money for permanent signings but is eyeing the £67,500 jackpot on offer to the winners of Saturday’s third round tie away at Accrington so he can add to his squad.
Stimson, pictured, has already made inquiries about several players and a windfall on Saturday may help him get the men he needs. He isn’t, however, discounting the threat from Accrington.
"To get into the fourth round of the cup would be a fantastic start to the new year," said Stimson.
"It’s a massive game because the prize after that could be anything. This gives us a serious chance of getting through but we’ll give Accrington the respect they deserve. They are neat and tidy and you never go there expecting an easy day.
"The money is massive and that’s another thing we can’t turn down. We’ll be going for that because if you do get it, it can only help you come January if you have to add to the squad.
"I don’t think it will buy you a player at this level but what it can do is go towards a player’s wages for a period of time. You might be able to commit to a real good player for a two or three-month loan and that would be huge."
