Manager Martin Allen has praised chairman Paul Scally for giving him the funds to make Gillingham a fighting force this season.

Allen had three new faces in the squad at the weekend following the arrival of experienced defender Adam Barrett from Bournemouth and Brentford winger Myles Weston on Friday.

The Gills also received international clearance for striker Deon Burton which allowed him to make his debut on Saturday as Allen’s side beat Bradford 3-1.

Allen said: "Gazzaniga went to Southampton and God bless (our) chairman, he has spent that money and bought players in. It was a great move from Andy Hessenthaler to bring Gazzaniga in on a free last season and sell him for loads of dosh because we have been able to build our team around that."

"We came in on Friday morning after winning at a Championship club (on Tuesday) and then had three new players in our squad.

He added: "I told them weeks ago that these players would be coming in and I said we are only going to get better and stronger. So for those boys they better keep at it, keep on it. They are all fighting for places and we have a good squad of players now."

Allen is satisfied with the squad he has now assembled but won’t stop trying to improve it – if funds allow.

"It is my job to always be looking to improve, to get better and to make things better for our club," said Allen. "If he (the chairman) says it’s no, then that’s absolutely fine."
