Martin Allen wants his squad to start making some real history.

A positive start to the League 2 campaign has seen the Gills climb to the top of the table after going five games unbeaten.

But Gills boss Allen (pictured) isn’t satisfied with that and held a meeting with the players on Thursday morning to remind them that there is much to be achieved.

He said: “(The unbeaten league run) has been good but I don’t want five games, I want 15 or 20, that’s the standards we have got to look for and try and achieve.

“I will reiterate to the players that we want to be unbeaten 10, 15, 20 games. We need to keep it going and to set our sights higher.

“I hear we have broken records for three away wins, as the best (away) start ever, but we want to create history and make proper markers and put flags down. The work had only just begun.”

And the Gills players are being rewarded in their pocket for the impressive start to the season.

Allen said: “It is up to the players and their vision, their goals, their earning potential and their career. The players are now earning good bonuses.

“We changed the bonus stricture in the summer and if they are up near the top of the league they will earn good money and they are getting rewarded for their dedication. It’s a job for them and they have to earn money. Who in life doesn’t want to do better for themselves?

“The players all need to keep focused. We have 20 odd senior players now and we have to try and keep them all happy. If they are not happy we need to keep them okay. We have to keep them all going in the right direction because everyone at times is going to play.

“We want to play in the division above and that’s the goal for everybody. If you get a good bonus every month if can keep them motivated.”

And for Allen, Thursday is set to be a busy day. Once training has finished he will be out celebrating the birthday of goalkeeping coach Carl Muggleton - with a game of golf and a curry - before moving into his new residence in Medway.

He said: “I move into my house (on Thursday) but I don’t know where they are going to put the furniture because I’m training. I just gave the lorry driver the keys at 8am and I don’t know where he is going to put all my furniture! Serious.

“He has the house keys and a great big lorry. Gordon only knows where all the furniture will be. It is going to be my first night in Gillingham which is going to be fun and my main problem today is where I am going to put everything.”
