Gillingham's FA Cup success has not yet brought in the funds to enable manager Andy Hessenthaler to splash the cash.

Despite banking £45,000 in prize money, after wins over Bournemouth and Leyton Orient, Gills chairman Paul Scally insists players must leave before others arrive.

Gillingham were hoping for their third round match against Premier League Stoke to be televised but neither ITV or ESPN were keen on taking their cameras to Priestfield. It means the Gills miss out on a windfall of £123,500.

With the player budget already at its limit, Mr Scally (pictured) insists the club have no spare cash to bring in fresh players when the transfer window reopens in January.

Asked if the unexpected cup returns made any difference, he said: "No, not at all. We have used our budget and are at it now.

"If players go, then we are balancing the budget but we have a good squad and that’s the squad we have pretty much until the end of the season now."

It means Hessenthaler will have to offload players if he wants to freshen up the squad.
