Gillingham chairman Paul Scally believes the hard work has only just begun after the club’s surge up the table.

Seven wins from the last eight games have put the Gills in the League 2 play-off chase but it’s not a target Mr Scally is satisfied with.

Mr Scally (pictured) said: "If I had a choice, I wouldn’t want to go through the play-offs. In an ideal world, we would all like to go up automatically. That’s what the aim has got to be.

"One minute we’re third from bottom and the next we’re in the play-off area and looking good. Our aim is still to get promoted and that’s been the aim since the start of the season.

"I don’t think the team will feel they have done the job by getting into the play-offs."

He added:"We have done nothing yet apart from show a few people that we can win games away from home and get ourselves into a better position than we were six weeks ago."

Gills travel to Torquay on Saturday one place outside the play-offs and five points off the top three in League 2.

The chairman is certainly better placed to talk promotion than he was in early November with the club on the verge of the relegation places.

He said: "The character in the team is now starting to come out and individual players are now far more comfortable with what they are doing. That is a testament to Andy Hessenthaler, the management team and everyone at the club."
