Gillingham chairman Paul Scally has said it would be a ‘tragedy’ if midfielder Adam Miller wasn’t with the club next season.
Miller has been a top performer and key member of Gillingham’s team in recent weeks but it hasn’t always been that way this season.
He was loaned out to League 2 Dagenham earlier in the campaign and offered a deal to cancel his Gillingham contract.
When Dagenham declined to make the move permanent, Miller returned to a hostile reception and the midfielder has consistently divided opinion among supporters.
Mr Scally said: "Adam Miller has been treated unfairly by some of the fans. He’s a fantastic player and I’m always pleased to see his name on the team sheet.
"He will make mistakes because he tries things that are different.
"Invariably most things come off and he is a 150 per cent committed player and for me it would be a tragedy if he wasn’t here next season. He’s a great person to have around the place.
"I don’t know what some fans want sometimes because Adam is a player who will try things that some players won’t. Sometimes they come off and sometimes they don’t.
"He is great off the field as well and around the club. He has something about him and we need those sort of people in the team."
Mr Scally also voiced his support for manager Mark Stimson, who has come under fire from some fans.
"It’s disappointing and sometimes it’s been quite distressing," said Mr Scally.
"I’m pleased with what he does and the way he goes about his business and I’m disappointed with some of the treatment from the fans.
"He’s got mixed views from the fans now. Perhaps he is too honest and he says too many things that he shouldn’t say that other managers won’t say.
"That’s one of his strengths and if people can’t accept that, it’s not his problem it’s their problem.
"Some people just like to hear the good stuff and sometimes you have to hear it the way it is.
"It’s a big old world out there but if you just keep feeding people the good sweets, then they don’t know what the bad sweets taste like. It’s not as black and white as people like it to be."
