Simeon Jackson leads the celebrations after scoring the winner at Wembley Picture: Matthew Walker
Simeon Jackson has signed for Championship side Norwich City.
The move ends a summer of speculation about the 23-year-old striker’s future at Priestfield.
Jackson has signed for an undisclosed fee, thought to be around £600,000, and agreed a two year contract with an option of a third.
The Gills will be taking Norwich striker Cody McDonald on a season-long loan as part of the deal.
Norwich were promoted as champions in League 1 last season while relegation to League 2 for the Gills meant it was always going to be hard for new boss Andy Hessenthaler to keep hold of the club’s star asset Jackson.
Jackson was out of contract next summer and, as he would then be over the age of 24, the Gills were unable to claim any compensation if he moved on. They have decided to cash in now and 15 per cent of the transfer fee will be going to Rushden as a sell-on clause.
The striker signed for Gillingham by Mark Stimson at the end of January in 2008 in a £150,000 deal from non-league Rushden.
Jackson (pictured, right) made his debut for the Gills on February 2 in a home game against Cheltenham but his first goal didn’t come until the end of March in a 2-1 win over Bournemouth.
He ended the following season as Gills’ top scorer with 21 in total, including the last minute goal at Wembley in the play-off final against Shrewsbury.
Jackson was again the club’s leading scorer last season in League 1 where he netted 17 goals.
He won't have long to wait before facing his former team-mates. The Gills are due to face Norwich in the first round of the Carling Cup on Tuesday, August 10 at Carrow Road.
