Gillingham defender Josh Gowling admitted Saturday was bitter sweet for him after inflicting further pain on a Lincoln City team who helped lift his spirits earlier in the season.

Gowling played six games as he helped lift Lincoln clear of relegation danger during November, after opting for a change of scenery having grown frustrated at a lack of opportunities with the Gills.

Injury hampered him on his return to Gillingham but after two months out he was recalled to the side and turned in a commanding performance.

His headed goal on 20 minutes set the Gills on their way to a comfortable 4-0 win.

"It was nice, but not nice, as I loved my time at Lincoln and didn’t really want to score," he said.

"The goal set the ball rolling because for the first 20 minutes Lincoln were the better side. After that, we just kicked on and got the goals.

"I had a great time at Lincoln and before I went there I was down and a bit low. I went there and it was a lift for me."
