Martin Allen described Leon Legge’s performance on Tuesday night as “awesome”, as he helped the side to a second straight clean sheet.
Legge (pictured), 27, joined the Gills at the start of the year from Brentford on a two and a half year contract.
“He is just coming up to the fitness levels that we need,” said Gills boss Allen, who has played the defender from the start in the last eight games.
“He didn’t play for a long time at Brentford but he went straight into our team and for big units like he is it sometimes takes a while to get up to full match fitness and sharpness. It does take time.
“On Saturday (against Bradford) he was fantastic and Leon on Tuesday (at York) was the Leon I have seen hundreds of times before. He was awesome.”
The Gills are, however, now likely to be without Charlie Allen for several weeks, after he damaged his hand on Tuesday night.
“I saw the hand at half-time and there was no way he could have carried on,” said the Gills boss.
“I thought he did really well in the first half. He has great energy and great legs and passed the ball well. It was a blow to lose him.
“He has had a bit of a dip in form but he is really young and new to all this. He might be an Allen but this is new to Charlie. Twenty months ago he was working on a building site. He is probably going to be out for a while now.”
