A comfortable away win against a team we really had to beat to maintain our push for promotion. Alan Julian needed to make a couple of good saves in the opening stages, but once things settled we were by far the better side.

Some of the football played was the best we have played away from Priestfield this season. The return of Josh Gowling and Danny Spiller appeared to balance the side and they both had good games, as did the whole side.

We now need to continue the good form. All of our home games are more than winnable and if we can get something against Rotherham and Chesterfield on the road then maybe the automatic promotion places are not out of reach just yet.

Having gone into this one with a pessimistic view, I was delighted to be proved wrong,

Lincoln started the brighter again and were unlucky not to take the lead but for a fortunate block from Julian. Once we got our first however we started to take control of the game.

Ironically Gowling took a well-placed header from a corner, against the team for whom his loan spell helped to resurrect his season. Cody added to his tally with two more before Bayo got a fully deserved goal after a MOM performance, narrowly beating Barcham who worked tirelsssly both up front and defensively, and helped create two of our goals.

A football supporter’s dream all in all with pies cooked to perfection, the sun shining, four glorious away goals, three points and a clean sheet. It is going to be a heart-stopping end to the season as usual with the Gills.

Gillingham played really well from start to finish, and the early goal settled us down and I thought it was a complete performance. Defensively Gowling did well, and Julian didn’t do anything wrong.

We created lots of chances and I thought Cody McDonald was outstanding, and Akinfenwa led the line well, without being penalised every time he did anything like against Hereford. The referee at Lincoln let the game flow and it helped.

Curtis Weston did alright until he went off and Andy Barcham was busy. Looking ahead I think we need to win four and draw the other to go up automaticaly, but we are in the mix.

I think we need to clobber somebody at home, but haven’t been scoring a lot at Priestfield, and the crowd are getting twitchy.

We had around 500 at Lincoln on Saturday, and I think it’s more fun watching games away at the moment, and when was the last time a Gillingham fan could say that.

It was a very good result and performance, and the thing that impressed me was that even at 2-0 we never gave up in the second half. If we keep that up for the rest of the season I am sure we can make the play-offs.

Hessenthaler keeps talking about automatic promotion, but I think that is a bit beyond us.now. It’s quite competitive, even Rotherham in 10th are not out of it.

I was very impressed with Matt Lawrence who I think is a player who does his job unnoticed. He is a very good defender commanded the defence well. kept them doing the right thing and showed all his experience.

I think Danny Spiller has also given us something different since he came back as well.

Every Gillingham player gave 100 per cent to the cause at Lincoln. I was particularly impressed with Andy Barcham.

His running and passing throughout the game was excellent, and he gets my man-of the match award. The defence played very well, the whole team did, and the attitutude throughout the side was good..

It will be nice to get automatic promotion, but I think we probably need to win all our three remaining home games to be in with a shout of doing that. If Gills do get to the play- offs, I am sure they can still go up by winning the final at Old Trafford.

JAMES PEMBLE

(Gillingham)

Lincoln on Saturday was just brilliant! After Hereford last week, this was just what we neded to pick us up.

It was by far the best I've seen us this season and was great to see a large travelling crowd backing us all the way. Surely this means Spiller has to start every week from now on. Promotion is back on!

Gillingham looked a very useful outfit with several quality players, and I think they have still got a very good chance of going up automatcially Akinfenwa knows League 2 so well and is the ideal player to hustle and bustle.

I was sorry to lose Josh Gowling after a spell on loan with Imps earlier this season. He then comes back to Sincil Bank and scores. I suppose the script was written for him.

The Lincoln players don’t seem to care, and they could find themselves out of work in May if they are not careful. There was no effort whatsoever. The fans care passionately about the club but I don’t think they do.

I have said since January that it be Stockport and Burton who will go down, but we are only five points ahead of them. It’s too close for comfort, but I still think we will be alright.

Nobody apart from Chesterfield has stood out for me as far as the top clubs are concerned. Even at Torquay the week before, I thought we were as good as them for 70 minutes.
