Our panel of fans were, on the whole, disappointed not to have taken all three points against Bury at Priestfield on Saturday, while the guest Shakers supporter was satisfied with the draw she predicted and suggested that the two teams could meet again in the League 2 play-offs.

DAVID GARTH

(Gillingham)

"It was disappointing not to come away with all three points having got our noses in front with another excellent goal from Curtis Weston, but Bury did deserve a point even though it looked to me as though Lowe was in an offside position.

"There wasn’t much between the teams in a poor first half that was spoilt by all three officials and I was disappointed that the ref didn’t caution John-Lewis during the game as he committed nearly a dozen fouls and his use of his arms when jumping for high balls saw both Garry Richards and Matt Lawrence hit in the face.

"The central defensive pair were excellent throughout (apart from one mis-timed tackle by Richards late in the game) but Bury seemed to get around that as their strikers pulled out wide in the second half and attacked down both flanks where Gillingham looked vulnerable.

"We are now at the business end of the season and need to look for three points in every game home and away - a draw is not really good enough."

LIAM BATCH

"Bury evidently came to Priestfield without fear and a willingness to play football, something I commend them for.

"The Gills had some good periods but on the whole I feel Bury dominated the game but they will be disappointed with not creating more chances.

"In the grander scheme of things a draw isn’t too disappointing but I felt that the diamond formation was ineffective and gave Bury the opportunity to exploit us with excellent flank play.

"Cody didn’t have his shooting boots on but let’s hope he was saving them for Shrewsbury next week where they will all need to play better. Overall, not a bad performance but certainly room for improvement."

"Three points were a must from this game if we wanted to challenge for the automatic promotion spot, but after a good first half we let Bury play in the second half, didn’t close down as well and played Weston (pictured) where he is not effective, on the right wing.

"He plays his best behind the front two, where he scores goals, and Hessenthaler’s decision to change formation left Weston somewhat out of the game.

"Weston took his goal very well, it was almost a replica of the one he scored at Crewe last week. The Bury goal looked offside and it was clear we didn’t have the luck of the previous games when Nutter attempted to scramble clear only to see the ball hit the crossbar and go in.

"The return of Lawrence added experience to the backline and if Cody McDonald had put away one of his two excellent chances in injury time things would have been different. A point was fair and against another side challenging for promotion it’s far from a bad result."

ALEX SARSON

(Wellingborough)

"Our first half performance warranted going in 1-0 up. We controlled the pace of the game well, with good showings from Curtis, Jack Payne, and Bayo.

"Sadly the second half was the complete opposite. We played route one and never got our foot on the ball. With constant interruptions from the referee and his two assistants. Bury got a goal which they deserved on their second half showing, and in the end it was a fair result, but not the one we needed.

"Two points dropped in a game where the ref was determined to be star."

RICHARD PEPPER

"In what was a must win game Gills failed yet again to finish off their opposition and paid the price.

"Weston scored another cracking goal, almost a mirror of his strike against Crewe last week. Unfortunately McDonald yet again squandered three great chances and, other than a 15 minute spell in the first half, Bury controlled the game.

"Had we of won the match it would have been very cruel on Bury. We also seem to be lacking fitness and are tiring before the opposition most weeks. The best we can hope for is a play-off finish, but with our inability to win matches, you can only see another season in League 2, with our poor form during the first half of the season coming back to bite us."

"I wasn’t surprised by the result and predicted a draw as I thought the teams might cancel each other out, and so it proved.

"We probably could have won it in the second half but a point was the fairest outcome – I’m just disappointed there weren’t nine goals this time!

"Maybe we’ll meet again in the play-offs..."
