Gillingham fans have been treated to two away wins in a week but can the good form continue? We’ve asked our panel of fans to give us their thoughts following the recent up-turn in fortunes on the pitch.
ALEX SARSON (Wellingborough)
“I honestly didn’t think I’d be sitting here after two away games on the trot looking at six points gained. I’ve been unhappy with almost everything around the club in recent weeks but a mixture of loan signings and maybe a bit of belief seems to have changed our fortunes.
Maybe we can bounce on from here but the real test for Hess (pictured) and Co will be to continue this run and start picking up points regularly.
Maybe by Christmas we can look realistically at the play-offs as an aim but keeping hold of the loanees we have is important, as our squad otherwise will quickly return to the form we saw up to and including the disastrous Dover game.”
PAUL BLAKELEY (Maidstone)
“What a different week that was for Gills fans! Finally after breaking our ridiculous away win duck, we followed it up with another one straight away. That can only do the team good and confidence should be high now.
Not only is it back-to-back wins but away wins, something none of us thought likely! Tuesday’s results have shown this league is still even and there’s no reason why we can’t move up the table – if we go on a run of course.
What pleased me against Barnet was that we came from a goal behind, something else we haven’t done this season.
It’s clear to see the improvements the loanees have brought – Whelpdale and Lee especially. Both of them are driving us forward from midfield. Most of the good stuff against Barnet came through them, including the goals.
It’s vital we build on this. The team have shown they have it in them and they need to keep doing that. It’ll be interesting to see who is picked if we ever get a full squad fit, as there seems to finally be some competition for places.
It wasn’t a flawless performance at Barnet but it’s unrealistic to expect that. We saw improvements and a win and for me that’s a good sign.”
SAM LIVINGSTONE (Pangbourne)
“It’s amazing how quickly football can change. Just one week ago everyone was calling for Hess’ head and we were seriously considering relegation! Two away wins later, the world looks a lot rosier.
By the next game we could have Kingy (pictured at Oxford), Richards, Barcham and Weston back and a win would catapult us in the top half of the table as serious promotion contenders!
I hope that Hess can keep up the good work of the last few days as the whole team looks a lot more committed.
The loanees have added direction, drive and the extra bit of quality that the team needed and we look a completely different team.
I would also like to single out Adebayo Akinfenwa, who had his best game for the club against Barnet, as whenever we played it into his feet, he held it up, feeding the midfielders with some sublime passes.
All in all, two brilliant games.
Keep it going Gills!”
JIM STAPLES (Greenwich)
What a cracking four days for the entire club and especially us fans. We’ve deserved those consecutive away wins and I’m glad they both came against (comparatively) local opposition which meant a significant number of our regular support were able to be there to see it happen.
I’m extremely wary of getting carried away after the accumulation of six very welcome points. The teams we have beaten represent poor opposition and are likely to be at the wrong end of the table come the end of the season. That said, the wins have pushed us towards mid-table and given us a real platform to build on in the coming weeks.
A good run of form heading into the busy Christmas period could prove a springboard for our season and I’m sure this is what Hess and the coaching staff will now be aiming for.
The new loan signings seem to have given the squad a new lease of life and the recent wins should now instill some much needed confidence. Having no game this weekend would normally be seen as a nuisance to a team on a winning streak but I think in this instance it could help the club as we have players coming back from injury and this gives them extra recovery time.
Finally full credit to the players who I criticised strongly after the last defeat at home to Crewe, they have shown some pride in the shirt and the effort was there for all to see at Barnet on Tuesday night.
