Gills players celebrate Curtis Weston's equaliser at Crewe

Gillingham fans were pleased that they kept their unbeaten run going, even though they could not find a winner against League 2 promotion rivals Crewe Alexandra at Gresty Road on Saturday.

SAM LIVINGSTONE

(Pangbourne)

"At half-time I was fearing the worst. The first half we were lacklustre and lethargic, Simon King had gone off injured and we had scored a horrible own goal.

"However we came out for the second half a changed team and scored a fantastic goal through the often-derided Curtis Weston. We then could have nicked the win but Adebayo Akinfenwa had a shot well saved.

"The most important thing was that we held on for a well-deserved point, especially as Crewe have been very consistent at home this season.

"With every team around us apart from Shrewsbury and Oxford slipping up it definitely feels like a point gained. We must now beat Bury on Saturday – it is vital to keep up the pressure on the sides above us in the automatic promotion spots."

RICHARD PEPPER

(Manston)

"Crewe away has always been somewhat of a bad omen for us and although we came home with a well deserved point, there were still a few black clouds over the fixture.

"We started the brighter and at half time it was hard to see just how we were one nil down.

"We went for long periods playing good football with Crewe doing very litttle, but they would then have a luckly break after doing nothing and almost score.

"We battled well in the second half and Curtis Weston was finally rewarded for his recent forn with a well-taken goal which was no less that we deserved.

"Sadly it now looks like automatic promotion is lost, with the teams around us all having between one and three games in hand.

"Although we have not been beaten again, we are not winning enough and haven't taken advantage of those around us drawing recently.

"A point away is never a bad result, although we really needed all three and should have taken them with all our posession."

WARREN LIGHTFOOT

(Lydden)

"Gills were a little disjointed compared to Tuesday but I suppose it was too much to expect a repeat performance.

"The biggest disappointment was of course seeing poor Simon King limp off with what appeared to be a hamstring pull.

"Cody seemed to be marked out of the game, rather like the Gills managed to do to Le-Fondre on Tuesday.

"Bayo showed some good touches and Curtis scored a very good goal.

"Overall I think the Gills had the better of the game and were unlucky not to come away with three points."

JAMES BARNES

(Strood)

"I thought we could have played a little better.

"We had a great game against Rotherham last Tuesday, but this time both Crewe and ourselves had chances to win the points.

"Cody McDonald didn’t have the best of matches, but Curtis Weston’s goal was awesome. Up the Gills."

KEITH PESTELL

(Gillingham)

"If we had taken all three points I don’t think anyone would have complained.

"We created the better chances and on another day could have taken all three points.

"I was surprised by how much Crewe felt the need to dive around and try to earn free-kicks, they normally play good, passing football. That said, the referee looked like he was watching a different game at times.

"The equaliser from Curtis Weston was good enough to have won any game. The defence seemed to miss the experience of Matt Lawrence, but Garry Richards and Tony Sinclair coped well once things settled following the departure of Simon King. I hope the injury is nothing serious."

CREWE FAN

Peter Morse

"A draw was a reasonable result for us after the way that Gillingham began the game.

"They made a confident start to both the first and the second half and, bearing in mind our recent poor results, it was important for us to stop the rot.

"We were up against two good strikers in Cody McDonald and Adebayo Akinfenwa, although Gills rely on them too much, and we did well to contain them.

"McDonald was marked by Patrick Ada and he barely got a kick, while David Artell is an old-school centre-half. He hasn’t got that much pace, but against Akinfenwa that wasn’t really a problem and they had a good battle which ended even-stevens.

"There are no truly outstanding teams in League 2, not even Chesterfield, who are currently top, so there is no reason why Gillingham can’t get promoted.

"They are a threat to anyone and as long as they can keep it tight at the back – Simon King is a key player for them – and score up front they can go up."
