Gillingham managed to bounce back from the disappointment of the midweek defeat at home to Chesterfield with a 2-1 win at Aldershot on Saturday thanks to a double from Cody McDonald (pictured). Here's what our panel made of it.

KEITH PESTELL

"After Chesterfield it was important to bounce back and pick up all three points, we did that but it was in far from convincing fashion.

"We looked disjointed and often resorted to long balls being played to Ade to hold, hoping he could bring others into play.

"The second half was better with Ade involved in setting up both goals for McDonald, which he took well. Aldershot missed an open goal in the second half which could have changed the outcome, but we held out for the three all-important points which moved us back into a play-off spot."

RICHARD PEPPER

"Aldershot achieved what they had been sent out to do by new manager Dean Holdsworth and stopped us from playing our game.

"They closed us down at every opportunity and won most physical challenges.

"Cody took both of his goals well, although full credit must go to Alex Rodman for a superb finish which was thankfully too little too late.

"It was never going to be a classic but I would have taken three points in lieu of a great performance before kick-off, so onwards and upwards!

WARREN LIGHTFOOT

"Gillingham failed to create even half the chances they had on Tuesday but still gained three points by ‘winning ugly’.

"The game wasn’t a classic by any stretch and the first half seemed to involve the ball being hoofed around the midfield, occasionally there were sparks of actual football with some nice passing but a distinct lack of a final ball.

"I thought Kevin Maher and Matt Lawrence were outstanding and even interchanged at some points with Kevin dropping back to cover Matt.

"Cody took his chances well and was only a foot or so away from a hat-trick. The irony of the game has to be that we played so much better on Tuesday and still got nothing out of it."

MELISSA GUTHRIE

"Gills dominated against Aldershot despite the less than dramatic scoreline. The game was scrappy, however, and we did have some issues that will need to be dealt with before Stevenage.

"Most notable was that we missed a really disciplined left-sided midfielder, and I often felt sorry for a significantly improved John Nutter.

"Without Andy Barcham, Nutter often looked up to an open left touchline but without a Gillingham player in sight.

"The game had a lot of positives not least of which was the three points. Maher had an outstanding game. He passed well and got himself all over the pitch."

JAMES PEMBLE

"It wasn't the best game but it was an important win nevertheless.

"It was a big three points and I was pleased to see some normally unsung players recieving credit (Lawrence, Maher etc).

"We can hopefully keep spirits up and take three more points on Tuesday."

"Gillingham definitely deserved the win with Cody McDonald the difference between the two sides.

"Two defensive mistakes from Aldershot helped towards the Gillingham goals and overall we didn’t play well enough to take anything from the game.

"Alex Rodman’s fantastic goal on his debut was a plus point, but Gillingham’s midfield dominated in what was, on balance, a fair result."
