Gills fans could have been forgiven before kick-off for allowing themselves to think about the prospect of the 30-game away day winless run coming to an end at out of form Bradford City on Saturday, however after an afternoon of disappointment at Valley Parade, the long wait goes on.
Here's what our panel had to say:
MALCOLM SMITH
(Grimsby)
"The most disappointing thing about Saturday’s game is that Bradford were there for the taking. For all the possession, pressure and corners in the first half we looked pedestrian, lacking the spark that would make our dominance count for something.
"The defence looked solid throughout which makes the loss even more difficult to take but that’s always the risk when you choose not to go for the win.
"Local Yorkshire radio were scathing of our tactics, suggesting we had set out to get a draw, and from Hess’s remarks after it seems this may have been the case.
"In this division we have to be going for the jugular. We will win more than we lose this way and at least if we lose it will not be for want of trying or as a result of being too cautious.
"A hard result to swallow for the 300 travelling fans."
EDDIE ALLCORN
(Canterbury)
"The game was poor quality and the best we could have got was a draw because we didn’t create much, but Lance Cronin dropped a clanger and cost us a point.
"Patience is wearing thin with Cronin (pictured). A lot of fans don’t rate him, he is too nervous when it comes to crosses and he missed another one earlier in the game.
"When they scored it was a case of here we go again – it’s now 31 games without a win and very disappointing. Everyone is despondent."
BRADFORD FAN
Mike Harrison
"I felt sorry for the Gillingham fans, their side almost did enough to earn a point.
"After a quiet first half the second was far more feisty with some crunching tackles, especially from Barry Fuller.
"The problem for Gills was that those challenges roused the home supporters which gave Bradford the fillip they needed.
"We’ve all lost to late winners, but when you are third-bottom of the table there is no room for sentiment. I don’t think the goal was a foul on Lance Cronin, he reacted too slowly to the cross and Steve Williams stood his ground.
"Both Bradford and Gills have started slowly but we have only played seven games. I’m sure Gillingham will be there or thereabouts come the end of the season."
