Torquay are a fine example of what can be achieved if you put a run of wins together.

Up until last weekend’s defeat to Bradford, they achieved seven back-to-back wins. That has pushed them right up the league.

They came back down to earth on Saturday and they will now be looking to bounce back on Saturday so we’ll have to be on our guard.

Their manager Martin Ling knows the area well as he has family over Maidstone way. He watched our game on Tuesday, doing his scouting like all managers have to do. We know we are in for a tough game and are going to want to put things right after we beat them 5-2 earlier in the season.

few decisions didn’t go our way last weekend at Port Vale and that proved costly.

Unfortunately, we lost but we showed a lot of spirit and even their manager Micky Adams said that our young kids were fantastic. We stopped the run of defeats on Tuesday, against Rotherham and had some good chances.

There were a few scary moments but I have to say Kingy, who played two games in a short space of time, was fabulous and Connor Essam again showed what a talent he is going to be and Jack Evans gave us a threat going forward.

Danny Jackman was up against Lewis Grabban, who is as quick as anyone in this league but he snuffed him out well.

It was a good performance and one to build on. We know that if we beat Torquay, which is a tough ask and results go for us, we could be one place and five points off the play-offs. The key thing for us is that we have four of the next five games at home. Can we build some momentum off the back of Tuesday and a good performance at Port Vale? I believe we can.

Full debuts for a few of our youngsters last week brought back memories of my own first start, for Hartlepool.

I was lucky enough to score two against Hull but I should have been walking away with the matchball. I started on the left-wing but moved up top after Paul Baker – who ended up coming down to Gillingham and was much-loved by the fans here – was sent-off. We didn’t have another striker so I went up top as a target man.

With a few minutes left, after already scoring twice, I went around the keeper but on my left foot I spooned it. It ended up hitting the post. We ended up losing 3-2 as Andy Payton netted a hat-trick for Hull.
