There were few signs of festive harmony on display at Crawley as a war of words ensued at the end of Gillingham’s victory over the League 2 leaders.

Management and players from both sides exchanged unpleasantries at the end of a lively and feisty exchange at the Broadfield Stadium.

In the end Crawley turned the floodlights off while the Gillingham players were conducting their post-match warm-down exercises.

“Our lads came off with their heads held high, which is more than a few of those in the opposite dug out did,” said Gills first-team coach Nicky Southall.

The Gills, who were backed by 1,300 fans, were unhappy over some of the challenges dished out on their players, particularly to Chris Whelpdale, who needed stitches to repair a split testicle after a challenge by David Hunt.

“It was shocking challenge and worthy of a red card,” said Gills boss Andy Hessenthaler.

After the game Gills defender Garry Richards made it clear his thoughts of Crawley boss Steve Evans with a blistering verbal attack.

Evans - whose side had been unbeaten in their last 15 games - and his assistant Paul Raynor were trading insults with the Gills bench all afternoon.

The Crawley manager said: “The best team lost. There will be parties in Gillingham. It's as if they've won the World Cup. We won't talk about the conduct of their bench - that's a separate issue.”

Gills stand-in captain Matt Lawrence tweeted: “Not sure how we beat Brazil in the final, but that's football. Gone to bed with the Jules Rimet Trophy.”

A police officer was eventually sent into the changing room area to ensure both parties left without further problems.

Southall added: “There were a few exchanges but they just need to take defeat and move on. You are not going to win every game. You can’t, it’s impossible, no team does that. Even Barcelona and Manchester United lose. You need to show a bit of class and move on.”

It should ensure of a fiery encounter when Crawley head to Priestfield on Tuesday, March 20 for the return fixture.
