Whether Chris Whelpdale meant it or not, the goal he scored at Torquay last weekend was fantastic.
To be honest, I think he had a look up at the keeper and saw him off his line as he turned. It was a stunning finish and I’m sure it wasn’t a fluke.
It was a well-judged shot for me and to lob the keeper from that angle was something that would be talked of as a goal of the season contender in the Premier League.
But as it’s in the lower leagues, it didn’t get the recognition that it deserved.
I said last week that I thought there was something special around the corner with the way we’ve been playing and we had a special performance 24 hours later – including that special goal.
To get five goals away from home at any level is a great achievement.
We looked like we were going to score every time the ball went forward.
With Jo Kuffour, Frank Nouble and Luke Rooney, we have the firepower to unlock most defences in this league. Our top scorer was probably sat at home watching the scores, so we certainly have a fantastic array of players for those positions.
Defensively we had a mad 10 minutes in the second half. We get these games scouted, get reports and do the stats. Before that game, Torquay had scored 12 goals at home and nine of them were in the second half.
We told the players that stat at half-time and it fell on deaf ears as within five minutes they had scored twice!
We’ve got a fantastic game coming up against a Oxford side who are up there – if we win we can sneak into third and that’s a big carrot for us.
We had a good start to the season, a few disappointing results and now we’ve come back again.
Sometimes we sit in the office and wonder what kind of performance are we going to get, as we don’t know at times.
It’s strange 13 games into the season that we don’t know what kind of performance we are going to get from the boys.
If we get it right, then invariably it ends up like it did last Saturday with five goals. If we get it wrong, then it’s a difficult afternoon for us.
We find it’s difficult that teams come to frustrate us.
We have to come up with a plan to nullify that. Sometimes it’s patience but we also need to get more tempo in our play, such as can we take a quick free-kick and unsettle the opposition?
