Lance Cronin answered his doubters with a clean sheet and a solid performance against Burton on Saturday – now he has revenge on his mind.

Southend travel to Priestfield on Tuesday and with the pain of last month’s Johnstone’s Paint Trophy penalty shoot-out defeat at Roots Hall still fresh in the memory, Cronin, pictured, is itching to put one over the Essex side.

"We owe them something," he said. "In the penalty shoot-out I saved two and I thought that might do it but it obviously didn’t. The boys are raring to go on Tuesday.

"For all the boys and the gaffer every game is treated like an FA Cup final and it was a kick in the teeth to lose on penalties."

Cronin, 26, was keen to make a good impression following the late calamity at Bradford, where he was out-jumped for the injury-time winner, but he returned this weekend with a top performance.

"I’m very happy and I needed that after last week," said Cronin. "I’m happy with the three points and the clean sheet is a bonus.

"I go out there every week putting in 100 per cent. If it goes well, it goes well and if it doesn’t you just need to keep working hard."
