A record-breaking start to the season for Gillingham means little to goalkeeper Stuart Nelson.

Not since his non-league days has he sat at the top of a league, but it is of little interest to the club’s No.1, pictured.

Nelson, who claimed a fifth clean sheet of the season on Saturday at Oxford, said: "In the past I have been up there with teams.

"Two years with Brentford we were in and around the play-offs and the same with Notts County in my first season, but we missed out.

"At Brentford I got in the play-offs but the only time I have been right up there (at the top) was with Hucknall when in non-league. We went on and won the league then but I personally don’t look at the table.

"It is nice to be up there and for people to tell you about it and the atmosphere around the club is great, because everyone is doing well, but it counts for nothing if we don’t continue. We are 11 games in but there are 46 to play.

"Those clean sheets count for nothing if we go away next week and concede four. It’s about taking it one game at a time and making sure we do our jobs.

"Our job at the back is to keep clean sheets and our job going forward is to score goals. Both don’t always happen, but as long as you get one of them you aren’t going to be far off."
