Ian Hendon apologised to Dover for any problems his shock departure as manager caused but admitted the chance to work at Gillingham was too good to refuse.

The former Barnet boss (pictured) returned from a two-week break on Sunday and on Tuesday issued his intent to join the Gills as assistant manager.

“I called a meeting to see him (Jim Parmenter) and I knew he was not going to be happy. I understand that.

“I did initially take the job on wholeheartedly and my intention was to get them into the Conference next year. While on holiday I was constantly on the phone and starting to look for players. I was doing my job but something came up and it was too good to refuse.

“Unfortunately the contract wasn’t signed. If it had of been then there would have been no chance to go back on it. That wasn’t done and that’s life.

“I spoke to a few people in the game who I respect and they said that these opportunities are few and far between, especially in the Football League. It was something I couldn’t refuse and I’m sorry if I have caused any problems at Dover. In the long run I’m sure they will understand.

“The set up at Dover was professional and that’s why I accepted the job. Everything there is right and I wish them success in the future.”
