Gillingham will attempt to lure Cardiff City defender Darren Dennehy to Priestfield for the remainder of the season.

Dennehy has just won a recall to Republic of Ireland’s under-21 side for a match against Estonia on March 3 in Dublin.

The 21-year-old has played six games for the Gills after agreeing an initial one month loan deal which expires after this weekend.

He’s helped Mark Stimson’s side to three clean sheets in that time and the Gills boss is keen to extend his stay.

“We’re trying to sort something out with the lad,” said Stimson. “He’s interested in staying, we’re interested in keeping him and Cardiff have given us the green light.

“He’s come in and done well. He’s a young lad, he’s big and he puts his head in and he must have been performing pretty well because he’s been called up for the Republic of Ireland under-21 side again. We’ve helped him get back in and that’s good for him.”

Tristan Plummer, meanwhile, who was on loan from Bristol City will not be offered a renewed deal. A hip injury cut short his stay at Gillingham and he was restricted to just two appearances.
