Manager Andy Hessenthaler backed rookie keeper Paulo Gazzaniga after a roller-coaster performance in the FA Cup tie with Bournemouth.

The Argentinian teenager, pictured, made only his second start for the Gills at the weekend after regular No.1 Ross Flitney failed to shake off a knee injury in time.

Gazzaniga was beaten three times, and made a clear mistake for the second, before making amends with a series of impressive saves to help Gillingham earn a replay.

Hessenthaler said: "He made one mistake and got punished but lots of top goalkeepers make mistakes. Sometimes you get away with them and sometimes you don’t.

"He made a fantastic save in the first half and a couple in the second. I am proud of him and it was never going to be easy."

Hessenthaler left it late before making a decision on whether Flitney would be fit to face Bournemouth.

"He was thrown in at the deep end, perhaps, because we thought Roscoe would be okay, and I am sure there were a few nerves," said Hessenthaler.

"He didn’t have a lot of time to prepare and maybe that helped. He applied himself very well and we were pleased with him."
