Gillingham manager Andy Hessenthaler has called on full-back Matt Fish to up his game in the wake of Saturday’s defeat.

Fish, who played under Hessenthaler for two years at non-league Dover, was at fault for the second goal in the defeat to Morecambe last weekend.

It was a mistake that Hessenthaler knows the player must learn from fast.

He said: "Their second goal was (from) a mistake in the full-back area where Matt Fish has to do better. He knows that and he needs to start growing up a bit.

"We brought him here and we know he is a good player but an experienced right-back wouldn’t have let that happen. It has happened and he needs to learn and learn quickly."

Fish was brought into the starting line-up after an injury to Barry Fuller ruled him out for the season.

Hessenthaler’s options in that area are limited but he knows all players make mistakes and dropping him isn’t necessarily the answer.

"We are not going to go crazy and you need to be careful with confidence," he said.

"He is a good player and he has shown that in (previous) games. On Saturday he made a poor decision and he was punished. We all make poor decisions.

"The goalkeeper made a poor decision (for the first goal) but he has been very consistent.

"We will make poor decisions unfortunately and you can get punished (for them)."
