Andy Frampton has emerged as a possible replacement for current Gillingham skipper Barry Fuller.

The new arrival has made a big impression on Andy Hessenthaler, with his influence on and off the field, leaving the Gills manager with a dilemma.

A final decision over who will captain the Gills this season is expected to be made by Hessenthaler this week.

He said: "Barry has been a very good captain but he knows Frampton has been a skipper at a lot of clubs. He is a leader with experience but I haven’t made a decision yet."

Fuller has been captain of the Gills since previous boss Mark Stimson relieved Andrew Crofts of the responsibility in October 2008. Fuller’s all-action style has won him many admirers but Frampton’s cool head and experience could lead to a new man taking the armband.

Frampton started Saturday’s game against his old team Millwall with the captain’s armband, while Fuller took over responsibilities after coming on in the second half.

"He’s a leader," said Hessenthaler of his new recruit Frampton. "He did it at Millwall when he was there and a few other clubs that he has been at.

"He is a fantastic leader and he talks very well, he organises and he looked very good in the first half (on Saturday).

"We are pleased with him and he is going to be a big asset for us.

"You need leaders on the pitch and we certainly have leaders in Matt Lawrence and Andy Frampton.

"We haven’t made a decision on (the captaincy) yet and I need to sit down and think about it."
