Andy Hessenthaler said Gillingham’s performance in the 3-1 win over promotion rivals Rotherham United in League 2 on Tuesday night was their best of the season at Priestfield.

Injuries led to the Gills boss adopting a diamond formation in the middle of the park with Curtis Weston behind the strikers and Kevin Maher holding in front of the defence.

The experiment was a successful one with Cody McDonald scoring twice and Dennis Oli adding a late third as Gills moved up to sixth in League 2.

Hessenthaler (pictured) said: “I would say it’s as well as we’ve played here.

“We changed the system because we just didn’t have the players - it was a little bit ‘square pegs in round holes’ on Saturday.

“We lost Joe Martin out on the left hand side so we changed it to a diamond shape and I thought it was one of Curtis Weston’s best games.

“We’ve worked on it. We actually played it a lot that way in the Championship when I was here and it worked well for us.

“We passed the ball well and the system helps you to pass the ball. Even though you’re a little bit narrow, you need your fullbacks to join in and both of them did at times.

“It was a good all-round team performance. I was very pleased.”

He added: “The only disappointment was conceding a goal straight after we had scored ourselves.

“We switched off from the kick-off and Alan Julian probably questions his positioning, I thought he was too central in the goal and if he’d been across a little bit, maybe he’d have been able to dive and make a save.”
