Gillingham manager Andy Hessenthaler rued his side’s lack of finishing after losing to Chesterfield on Tuesday.

The Gills had plenty of chances at Priestfield but didn’t put any of them away.

Hessenthaler, pictured, said: “We are disappointed we haven’t come away with anything but they are a good side.

“We are obviously disappointed with the goals we gave away and that first one could have been avoided and we need to do better there.

“The second one, we looked at the DVD to see if it was offside, but we can’t see exactly when the ball was played and whether the lad is offside. If you can’t see it you can't judge it. A lot of people told me they thought it was offside. He has made the judgement and we can’t do anything about it.

“We just needed to take our chances in the first half and it would have been a totally different game.

“We came up against another keeper who was in inspired form and the opposition manager told me after the game that we were the best team he played this season.

"That doesn’t help but it’s a nice compliment from John Sheridan (Chesterfield manager) because he was a good footballer and he played the game the right way. For him to say to me as he walked off ‘you’re the best team we’ve played this season’ it’s nice, but sometimes you would rather play not as good and win the game.

“We can take lots of positives from it, we had 21 shots on goal but unfortunately we didn’t score, that’s what the stats are saying.

“So there is a bit of criticism to us and we have to do better in that final area.”
