Andy Hessenthaler remained cool and calm after Saturday’s morale-boosting victory at Oxford.

Gillingham ended 18 months of torture on their travels with a first away win since May 2009 and a victory which ends a run of three successive defeats for Hessenthaler’s team.

It was reason to celebrate but the Gillingham manager knows they need to keep their focus.

"We knew that win was coming," said Hessenthaler (pictured). "We’ve been hurting for the last couple of weeks since the Dover game because we’ve had a lot of criticism and some rightly so.

"We have shown strong character in the dressing room but we are not getting carried away. It’s only one win and we’ll take that performance on to Barnet on Tuesday night.

"We need to now go on a real positive run of games and this is hopefully the starting point of that. Maybe this can relax the players a bit more now and we can achieve what we want to achieve."

Hessenthaler took over a team that hadn’t won away in 25 league and cup games and the poor form on their travels continued this campaign. Saturday’s win at Oxford was their first in 10 attempts this season.
