Manager Andy Hessenthaler saw enough from his team in the goalless draw at Port Vale on Saturday to suggest that Gillingham can start dragging their way up the League 2 table.
The Gills boss (pictured) said: "We’ve set a standard now against a team who were top of the table and we can’t fall away from that.
"The boys were a credit to the club. If we keep putting a shift in like that then we’ll start creeping up the table and be in the position we want to be by Christmas and really go for it."
Gillingham’s previous venture away from home saw them concede seven goals at Accrington but Hessenthaler feels the team have now moved on.
He said: "We’ve worked hard since the Accrington game on the training ground. The players were wounded and very hurt after that.
"There’s a togetherness in the changing room and there are players who want to do well for the football club. When I came back that was what I demanded.
"There are going to be disappointments along the way but if we put in performances like that then we’ll benefit come the end of the season."
