Manager Andy Hessenthaler has challenged his Gillingham players to turn their steady start in League 2 into a double-figure unbeaten run.

The Gills have drawn their two opening league matches and Hessenthaler is hoping the points keep ticking over on a regular basis.

A confident Hessenthaler (pictured) said: "We’ve got to go on runs and if we can go 10 games unbeaten then we’re the team that is going to be up there.

"You have to have goals like that within the season. We’re two games unbeaten and if we can go and win our next eight games then we could be 10 games unbeaten."

Draws against Cheltenham and Hereford have left others in League 2 to make the early running, but with just two games gone the Gills are only four points off the top.

Hessenthaler said: "We’re unbeaten in the last two games. That’s two draws and you don’t want too many of those over the season, but there will be draws and maybe we are getting them out of the way early.

"If you are going to have any success you need to make sure you go on runs in a season where you’re unbeaten.

"There is frustration as those two performances could easily have made six points without a doubt.

"There are more positives than negatives and I’m pleased, frustrated a little bit, but excited because we have players to come back in and there is a real belief in the dressing room."
