Andy Hessenthaler admitted it was an emotional return for him at Priestfield on Saturday.
The last time he managed a Gillingham side at home was in November 2004 when his team lost 2-0 against Derby in the Championship.
Hessenthaler, pictured, resigned a week later following a heavy defeat in Crewe and after almost six years away he was thrilled to be back in the Gillingham dugout.
"It was a great reception and I was very humbled by all of the fans, they were tremendous," he said. "I’m obviously disappointed I couldn’t give them those first three points but they all know there’s a long way to go.
"The reception I got made the hairs on my neck stand up; it was emotional.
"I’m delighted by the way they treated me and I hope I can deliver what they want and get this promotion they are all after."
