Gillingham boss Mark Stimson has called on the club’s supporters to play their part in the crucial game against big-spending Southampton on Saturday.

Stimson knows a win could secure the side’s place in League 1 for another season but anything less would leave them facing a final-day showdown with Wycombe next weekend.

The Gills may be in a relegation scrap but they haven’t lost to any of the leading clubs at home and Stimson knows everyone has to be on top of their game to keep that run going.

"Let’s make it hostile and let’s make as much noise as possible," said Stimson, ahead of Gills’ last home game of the season.

"The fans can be our 12th man and we’ll certainly need them on Saturday. We need them to save their voices and energy on Friday and bring it to Priestfield for the match.

"The players are going to be giving it their best and hopefully we can all enjoy a great day."

Southampton started the season with a 10-point deduction, following administration issues, and that cost them the chance of making a proper challenge for promotion.

They sit in seventh and are unable to make the play-offs but Stimson knows Alan Pardew’s side are unlikely to show any signs of slowing down.

"Good players won’t ease off and they are good players. They don’t have a weak link," said Stimson.

"They have outstanding individual players, and we have to be aware of those but the way we’ve performed at Priestfield and the backing we get means a lot."
