Gillingham face the first of two successive home games this weekend and boss Martin Allen has highlighted their importance.
Aldershot arrive on Saturday with a record of four straight league defeats behind them, while Burton visit the following weekend.
Allen isn’t hiding from the fact that it’s a great chance to strengthen his side's grip at the top of League 2. "We can’t deny it, you would have to be mad not to look at it that way," he said.
"Two home games and six points will put the club in a very strong position at this early stage. All the players and supporters recognise it and it is no point me denying it."
First up are an Aldershot team struggling for form and sitting second from bottom in the table.
Allen (pictured) added: "It is an exciting time and although we are not going to say it is a crucial time, it is an important time. We can really make a mark to get as far clear from fourth place as we can."
Gillingham’s unbeaten record fell last time they were on home soil, as Rochdale left with maximum points after their 2-1 win.
The major problem that day was a poor first half – an uncharacteristic trait for the Gills this season and one which Allen hopes is not repeated.
He said: "The senior players are always talking about getting off to a good start, getting on the game straight away and we do leave a lot of it to the players."
