Gillingham manager Martin Allen said going top of League 2 is a fine achievement, but he believes his team are still a work in progress.

Gills whave made a strong start to their promotion quest, with 10 points from a possible 12 after Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Chesterfield, but Allen is not getting carried away.

He said: "We have all heard it a million times before, managers saying we’d like to be there at the end of April, and of course we all would.

"We get enough knockbacks in this job and this life we lead, when things are not good and you give yourself sleepless nights, so it’s nice when opportunities like this come along but there is no need for a celebration.

"Our club has done well, and everybody should be very pleased, including the supporters. They stayed with the team on Saturday, they could see and recognise the effort. The boys have played a lot of games in a short space of time, all high intensity, and it’s tiring and draining."

He added: "Overall I am happy with what’s happening, but I would say there is work to be done to evolve and develop us into a much better team."

Allen admitted he was disappointed Gills fell behind on Saturday, but said he won’t criticise his players in public.

He said: "I would never do that – unless they did something absolutely stupid. It will be kept in-house. We’ll look at the videos, and the areas where it was, and explain it to the players."
